Testosterone Supplements Increase Muscle And …

Testosterone decreases with age.

Low levels are linked to decreased muscle and bone mass, heart disease, diabetes and mental decline. Millions of people take testosterone as an anti-aging supplement, but scientists disagree on its risks and benefits. Dutch researchers found that testosterone supplements (80mg of testosterone undecanoate per day for six months) increased muscle mass and decreased body fat in 237 healthy men 60 to 80 years old with low testosterone levels.

However, they made no improvements in strength and fitness, mental capacity, bone strength or quality of life. Other studies found that the benefits and side effects of testosterone supplements increased with dosage. Also, testosterone supplements work best when accompanied by a weight-training program. Testosterone builds muscles and exercise improves the ability to use them. (Journal American Medical Association, 299: 39-52, 2008)
